« « Accountability and Perspective (Willis Story)
Willis readily admits that it isn’t always easy and that he continues to educate himself as much as possible about nutrition and health-related topics. His advice for people who find it difficult to recover from lapses and setbacks is to establish more accountability. He did this for himself by becoming a small group leader in the NIFS Mini Marathon training program.
“Get in a structured exercise program, and beyond that, put yourself in a leadership position within that program. Be willing to commit yourself and care enough to lead others. For me, that made all the difference.”
When asked about maintaining motivation after you’ve had some initial success, Willis responds, “That’s when the long-range perspective becomes so important.” A lot of people do this to look good, and some people do this to be able to participate in activities of life, and some people exercise to keep their organs healthy. I think there’s a place for all three. Develop goals that meet all three—and know that you don’t need to make these changes instantly.”
