Do you have a feel for your current position within the Stages of Change? If not, look back through the descriptions of individuals in each stage. You need to understand where you are now so that you’ll be able to navigate the uncharted territory of new behaviors.
- Change is a process that happens in the minutia of everyday living—small steps count.
- Support is essential—find it in as many places as possible.
- Set goals that are smart, are action-oriented, and reflect your personal beliefs, values, and attitudes.
- Start recording your behaviors in whatever way you feel most comfortable— perhaps a journal, or refer to Appendix A, “Worksheets and Additional Resources” for sample food, activity, and goal logs.
- Treat yourself with the same consideration you might show a good friend; when you make a mistake, evaluate what happened, plan what to do the next time, and move on!
