The next step in determining if going global is right for you involves beginning to think internationally. Doing so is critical to determining whether you would enjoy being surrounded by things foreign for several years.

• Watch the BBC instead of CNN or your local nightly news—or better yet, watch them both and compare the different perspectives and priorities.

• Read international newspapers and magazines, such 26 Get Ahead by Going Abroad as the Economist and the International Herald Tribune for Americans; the New York Times if you live outside the United States—or even if you live outside New York City.

• Read foreign newspapers and periodicals from the regions and countries that interest you most; there is usually an English-language version that you can access online. Subscribe to a daily newspaper in a language you can read.

• Practice your foreign language, especially for business conversation.

• Practice your English if it is your second language; it remains the language of international business.

• Travel abroad on a personal vacation.

• Identify international groups or organizations in your area and explore how you might get involved—or at least participate enough to expose yourself to other cultures.
